Life at John Cabot University

Throughout Northeastern's Nu.in Program, you will be studying at John Cabot University (JCU)! Above is a picture of one of my favorite spots on campus, the Guarini Courtyard.

JCU is located in a town in Rome called Trastevere. The word "Trastevere" comes from the Latin phrase "trans Tiberim" which translates to "beyond the Tevere" or "beyond the Tiber". It wall called this because the river that flows through the center of Rome is called the Tiber and Trastevere literally means, the town across the river. (2)

JCU was founded in 1972 as a four-year liberal arts university. It is an English-speaking university and has degree-seeking and visiting students from over 80 countries. Their mission statement as quoted on their website says "John Cabot University is dedicated to creating and supporting a welcoming community that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive."

As a student in Nu.in, you will be living in the Gianicolo Residence Hall. Gianicolo is an apartment-style residence hall with occupancy ranging from two to seven persons per apartment. This dorm is in a perfect location at only a short five-minute walk from the Guarini campus and a ten minute walk from the Tiber and Critelli campus buildings. While you might be of legal drinking age in Italy, all Northeastern students follow the same rules as you would in university housing on Northeastern's campus. This means that no alcohol is permitted in the dorms.

All apartments in Gianicolo have a kitchen, 1-2 bathrooms, a common area, and a washing machine. The dorms also come with linens and towels. The kitchens come with a fridge and freezer, a stove, oven, microwave, sink, as well as pots pans, and silverware. This was so helpful during my time studying abroad because I didn't need to use space in my suitcase with sheets or pillows, and I didn't have to go buy kitchen appliances!

John Cabot University also has a dining hall! Northeastern will load money onto your JCU student ID to last you throughout the semester. Keep in mind that you will also have a kitchen in your apartment so do not need to eat at the Tiber Café for every meal. I would go in the mornings before or after class to get a coffee and sometimes lunch, and would usually make myself dinner, or go out to eat with friends!
